Many centuries ago, a group of heroes defeated a demon, and died in the process. This linked them. Every time the demon returned, the heroes would be reborn and gather together to defeat the demon once again.
The cycle continued for years untold, until one by one, the heroes dwindled, going without reincarnation, although no-one knew why.
Except the demon who had realised that he could trap the spirits of the heroes at the moment of death, keeping them from being reincarnated. He began to hunt the heroes down and subject them to cruel acts of suffering until they died, their souls imprisoned in the location of the demon's first defeat. This way, he hoped to keep them from causing him harm, and to slowly corrupt them into spirits just as twisted as him.
